About Uncommon Goods

Uncommon Goods LLC (UG) is an online marketplace offering creatively designed high-quality merchandise.  UG believes that creativity and the expression of individuality represent two great human treasures. UG has set out to create a business that makes uncommon goods accessible to everyone. Founded in August 1999, UG is privately held and headquartered in Brooklyn, New York.

UG presents shoppers with an array of special features that make shopping at an entertaining, convenient, and uncommon experience:  uncommon knowledge; artist bios; design challenges; product reviews; diverse blog posts; icons that call out when an item is handmade, recycled, or community voted.  In addition to giving customers a unique shopping experience, UG would like to make the world a better place in whatever way we can.

  • Sustainability means more than just being “green.” UG believes sustainability starts with integrity in everything we do, treating each individual inside and outside our company with dignity and respect.
  • Since the start of the business, UG has featured products that contain recycled components and all the items we sell are produced without harm to animals. UG will not sell products containing leather, feathers or fur.
  • UG is an internet and catalog company and understands that by producing a catalog the earth’s resources are being used.  We try to minimize that impact by shifting more business online, limiting how many catalogs we mail, and printing catalogs on either recycled paper (virtually all of which is from 30% post-consumer waste) or paper sourced from FSC certified forests (which are harvested in a sustainable manner).
  • Better to Give – Every UG customer has the opportunity during checkout to tell us to donate a portion of our profits to a non-profit organization, every time they shop with us
  • B Corporation – UG is proud to be a founding member of B Corporation, an organization created to help customers understand the social and environmental impact of their purchases. The B seal means that a company has met the standards outlined in a comprehensive screening questionnaire, which evaluates them on issues ranging from providing a living wage, to lessening their impact on the environment, to giving back to the community.  Learn more by going to http://better.bcorporation.net/company/uncommongoods.

Peek into the Company’s Work Environment

UG would like to change the way business is conducted by making sustainability a part of every decision. Each month, employees from all areas of the company gather to discuss how we can make Uncommon Goods more environmentally friendly, socially responsible and an ever-more rewarding place to work.
