Packaging: Preparing to Ship

These guidelines show how to package merchandise in cartons for shipping to Uncommon Goods. Following these guidelines will help ensure merchandise arrives to the Uncommon Goods warehouse undamaged.

General Packaging Guidelines

  • Make sure all cartons are sturdy and have all flaps intact, no holes, tears, or corner dents
  • Remove any labels and previous shipment markings from reused cartons before shipping
  • Seal cartons with strong tape designed for shipping
  • Do not use strings or paper over-wrap
  • Shipment labels should not be placed on the seam of the carton to avoid damage when the box is opened
  • Fragile merchandise should be packed with 3” of packing material on all sides (See Fragile Items section above)
  • Merchandise with sharp edges should be wrapped to prevent damage (See Sharp Items section above)
  • Heavy merchandise should be packed in double-walled cartons
  • For a Unit that exceeds 50 lbs, attach a label that clearly indicates “Team Lift” on the top & sides of the box
  • Provide a packing slip with your shipment (see Packing Slip section below for requirements)
  • Clearly indicate on cartons what merchandise it contains—this will help the process run more smoothly
  • If you are packing a family of SKUs together, you must clearly separate each SKU within the container using cardboard dividers or packaging, like boxes or bags (ex. all 12 months of a birthstone program must be separated)
  • Purchase Order numbers should be written on the outside of all cartons
  • Do not ship small cartons that are taped together
  • Shipment labels should be consistently placed in a way that is easy to visually locate, either on the top or side of the carton. Top placement is preferred.
  • Position bottles that contain liquids upright. Each bottle should be individually wrapped to contain leaks.  Indicate which side is up.
  • Items that are prone to heat or cold damage must be indicated as such on the outermost carton and on the inner containers

Containers

  • All cartons should be Regular Slotted Cartons (RSC), a six solid-sided box
  • Cartons should be an ECT-32 (edge crush test) parcel example parcel example
  • Cartons should have a burst strength of 200 lb./sq. inch
  • Cartons should not be bundled together using bagging, taping, elastic, or extra straps
  • If reusing boxes from previous shipments, be sure to remove any previous shipping labels or markings to avoid confusion by the carrier
  • Make sure there are no holes, tears, or corner dents in the outer carton
  • If possible, place protective piece of cardboard at top of carton to protect merchandise when box is cut open with blade.

  • All pallets must be labeled on three sides with “Uncommon Goods” (to make them identifiable to our 3PL partners), the Vendor Name, and the PO Number.

Packing Slips:

Print your packing slip straight from the Extranet. Uncommon Goods requires that every shipment include at least one packing slip.  Packing slips should be placed in a waterproof envelope marked as “Packing Slip” attached on top of the lead box outside of the shipment. If an envelope is unavailable, place the packing slip inside the lead box on top of the merchandise and packing material. It must include company name, company address, best phone number, and email address for contact if Uncommon Goods has a delivery question.

Additional Information About Packing Material

All products sold by Uncommon Goods need to be able to withstand the standard shipping process for parcel shipping. Products that are fragile, sharp, liquid, powder, or contain multiple components should be packaged according to the guidelines provided. See Packaging for Specific Items

BoxesUse a solid six-sided corrugated container that should not give way when medium pressure is applied. Contents of the product inside should be securely held in place. Box must be sealed with tape or glue. Any merchandise that is glass, ceramic, has sharp edges, and/or has multiple components should be packed in a box. If there are multiple components, each piece needs to be individually wrapped to prevent them from damaging each other.

Poly Bags: These are transparent bags that should be a minimum of .09 mil thickness. Any merchandise packaged in a poly bag should be sealed completely. The purpose of the poly bag is to keep merchandise safe from tearing, dust, dirt, and liquid. Bags should be the appropriate size for the merchandise. Poly bags specifically should be used for items that are plush, textile, apparel, fabric, and intended for babies.

Kraft Paper: The most eco-friendly form of dunnage is recycled and recyclable Kraft paper.  For individually packed items, a lighter weight paper is ideal as to not crush or damage the product.  For carton packing and re-shippers, heavier weight paper will need to be used.

Bubble WrapWhen an eco-friendly option, like paper or biodegradable material, is not available or not a viable option, bubble wrap is the best way to protect especially fragile items. When using bubble wrap, product should be wrapped completely so it is not exposed in any way. Bubble Wrap is also ideal for use as packing material inside boxes.  Use bubble wrap that is not too thin and/or will not deflate easily.

Shrink WrapWhen an eco-friendly option, like paper or corrugated envelopes, are not available or not a viable option, shrink wrap can be used to stabilize products, keep sets from being separated, keep merchandise clean and/or provide tamper resistance. Toys, games, books, and merchandise sold as a set should be shrink wrapped.
